Burning Candles

Burning Candles | 20/10/2020

So….you thought burning candles was as easy as light and stand back! But to get the best out of candles here are a few tips.

·        If your candle isn’t burning evenly, we recommend that on the first burn you allow the candle to burn for at least an hour and no longer than four hours. This allows the candle to ‘pool’ which means the whole top of the candle is melted. This is especially important on container candles. Do not re-light within 45 minutes, so the wax is allowed to cool down. This stops the candles from ‘funnelling’ which means that the softened wax in the centre just melts deeper but not wider. Always trim the wick to 1cm or less to stop the candle flame being huge and producing smoke.

·        If the flame is big and smoking, it’s likely that the wick is too long. Every time you light your candle always ensure it is 1cm or less. If it still waves uncontrollably, it may be in a draught which is ‘fanning the flames’ so to speak.

·        When you blow your candle out, you can get a sooty smell which can overpower the lovely smell you were trying to create. The best way to put your candle out is with a candle snuffer if it’s not in a container. If it is in a container just put the lid on. This starves it of oxygen and contains the smell.

That’s all the boring stuff over! Enjoy your candles whether they are for relaxing, revitalising, cover cooking/smoking smells or just for the relaxing meditational value of non-scented candles.
